The GW Institute for Korean Studies and the East Asia National Resource Center present: Korea Policy Forum Virtual Roundtable Discussion  ROK-China Relations: Challenges and Opportunities in the Next 30 Years Friday, October 28th, 2022 9:00 AM - 10:15 AM Virtual Via Zoom RSVP Event Description This year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between South Korea and China. Over the past three decades, the two countries have made breakthroughs in ending Cold War hostilities and have developed their bilateral relationship into a growing strategic partnership with robust trade relations and people-to-people exchanges. However, these bilateral relations have also been severely damaged by the dispute over the deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system announced in 2016 and growing anti-China sentiment in South Korea. Amid the intensifying strategic rivalry between the United States and China, ROK-China relations will navigate uncharted waters in the next decades. Four leading experts from the U.S., South Korea, and China will be joining us to discuss their views of the challenges and opportunities for the ROK-China relations in the next 30 years. Founded in the year 2016, the GW Institute for Korean Studies (GWIKS) is a university wide Institute housed in the Elliott School of International Affairs at the George Washington University. The establishment of the GWIKS in 2016 was made possible by a generous grant from the Academy of Korean Studies (AKS). The mission of GWIKS is to consolidate, strengthen, and grow the existing Korean studies program at GW, and more generally in the greater D.C. area and beyond.
